Electron Microscopy

Contact our Electron Microscopy department here.

Electron Microscopy services compliment auxiliary methodologies performed at ABI. ABI is committed to providing a wide range of electron microscopic services tailored to meet the individual needs of the investigator.

The electron microscopy staff prides itself on the ability to handle unique and custom samples. As each individual sample is unique, in terms of overall composition, all samples are handled using the techniques and protocols which best fit the virus, tissue, or cell line to be examined.

The electron microscopy department takes great care with reagents and procedures employed for its microscopy services. Multiple grids are prepared from each specimen to ensure accurate and consistent results. All of the micrographs produced at ABI are developed and printed to publication quality standards. Final reports are written and/or approved by on staff virologists or biologists. ABI also stores all grids, blocks, negatives and records for the investigator. The electron microscopy department works in accordance with the FDA’s “Points to consider” recommendations and also in accordance with the good laboratory practice for non-clinical laboratory studies.

ABI provides the investigator with all of the recommended reagents and protocols needed to properly prepare their specimens for electron microscopic examination. We therefore encourage our customers to call and discuss their projects with our electron microscopy staff, who have over thirty years of combined electron microscopy experience. It is the policy of ABI to insure client confidentiality for all services performed. Prior to submitting samples for any electron microscopy service, please contact our customer service specialists. Our staff will discuss your project and assist in arranging for proper specimen preparation, storage, and shipment.

Electron Microscopy is the only method which permits the observation and analysis of viruses and other biological specimens at an ultrastructural level with high resolution. It is valuable in visualizing normal and abnormal cell anatomy, observing the effects of experimental manipulations on cells and tissues, and examining the fine structure of macromolecules for the presence, absence, and quantitation of known microbial or adventitious agents in specimens.

Electron Microscopy is vital in support of process development, and in research projects such as antiviral studies and bioreactor failure investigations. Specialized services and custom Electron Microscopy projects are available from ABI.

ABI’s areas of expertise in the field of biological Electron Microscopy include

  • Ultra-Thin Section Electron Microscopy
  • Immuno-Electron Microscopy
  • Virus Particle Counts
  • Virus Characterization
  • Negative Stain
  • Intensive search for new or suspected viruses and other microbes
