Cell Biology Products
Cell cultures of human or animal origin can be prepared from starter cultures supplied by the customer or from ABI's extensive bank of normal and tumor cell lines. Cultures supplied by the customer are first tested for mycoplasma and other adventitious agents prior to expansion.
Sub-cellular fractions and organelles can also be isolated and purified on a custom basis with appropriate consultation and input from interested investigators. For example, cytoplasmic extracts, cytoplasmic membranes, ribosomes, mitochondria, nuclei, nuclear extracts, etc., can be isolated and purified by a variety of techniques supplied either by the investigator or ABI staff.

General Information
Anchorage-dependent cultures can be ordered in tissue culture vessels ranging in size from 75 cm2 to 850 cm2. Prices for the preparation of cell packs (gram wet weight) will be provided on request. Generally, 1 gram net weight is equivalent to approximately 1 x 109 cells.
A unit minimum applies as follows:
- 4-flask minimum for 75 cm2 flasks.
- 2-flask minimum for 150 cm2 flasks.
Large-Scale Cell Culture Facility
The cell culture facilities have been set up to accommodate cell culture systems ranging from 2 to 200 liters of suspension cell culture and 5 to 500 grams of cell pack for monolayer cultures. In addition to the standard CO2 incubators and roller racks, a wide range of research and pilot bioreactors is available to model and test production strategies:
- Stirred-vessel reactors, batch mode.
- Hollow-fiber reactors.
- Airlift reactors.
These cell culture systems are matched by appropriately sized product separation and purification capabilities which include:
- ultrafiltration
- continuous-flow centrifugation
- high-performance liquid chromatography
- solvent extraction
- cell organelle separation
- sonication equipment
The cell culture group has experience with a variety of cell lines of plant, insect, avian, and mammalian origin. Both suspension and anchorage-dependent lines are routinely cultured.
Human Monocytes and Macrophages
Advanced Biotechnologies Inc offers both purified monocyte cell suspensions and macrophage cultures derived from circulating blood monocytes. Given limited availability of whole human tissue for isolation of macrophages and the heterogenicity of these cells in different tissues, circulating human blood monocytes offer the best source material for establishing macrophage cultures. Using our integrated technologies of cell separation by centrifugal elutriation (counter-flow centrifugal separation of cells by size) and macrophage and lymphocyte culture techniques, ABI provides purified and characterized cell suspensions and cultures for research applications.
Cryopreserved ampules of purified monocytes are also available as a flexible, proven alternative to fresh cultures. Large lots from individual donors are available on a reserve basis.

Human Interleukin 2
ABI has been a long-standing industry supplier of purified, natural human interleukin-2. Our IL-2 is produced from human mixed-lymphocyte cultures and purified by a series of column chromatography steps. IL-2 is assayed for biological activity by MTS bioassay (cell proliferation) and by long-term T-cell growth assay using human peripheral blood mononuclear cells.
